Impromptu dinner

Running a course this morning, I had a slightly larger breakfast so that I wouldn’t be at all hungry for the rest of the morning. This is because I knew that freshly-baked, still-warm cookies would be delivered with the tea and coffee at the start and again mid-morning. I didn’t succumb but had people laughing when I sniffed them a couple of times. :-)

At lunch, I wasn’t inspired by the sandwich fillings or salad options so went for something hot. I allowed myself a small (1.5″ square) roast potato with the carrots and cabbage. What I didn’t know then was that I was going to be eating out this evening.

I was invited to join a group for a (free) meal at a Mexican in Covent Garden. I passed up on the starters but indulged in a few nachos. I chose the healthiest option on the menu — the grilled chicken — ordering it minus mayonnaise, and only ate half the bun it came in. It was served with chips, but I only allowed myself a few, leaving the majority untouched on my plate. I felt rather pleased with myself today.

I did just over 10,200 steps.

Carrots, cabbage + 1/2 roast potato 200
Dinner 6 nachos 250
Grilled chicken + half a bun + 8 chips 350

Day 151: 200g baguette

5 June 2008 at 10:57 pm (exercise, food diary, photo, recipe)

First thing I did was to weigh the rest of the baguette I bought that was reduced. It had to be eaten today or thrown out. 200g was about 480 calories. I figured I’d be careful with the cheese and oil today. I gave some of the baguette to Frank in the evening to go with his pasta. I ate the rest. And very nice it was too.

10:30am  Wholemeal scone with peanut butter and chocolate spread + mandarin + tea

I confess that there was some showing off in my topping choices. It’s nice to hold my hand over the flame now and then, knowing I won’t get burnt.

The red drips are from a jar of jam.

4:50pm  Bean, celery and tomato soup + baguette

This soup recipe was recently sent to me by my poppy seed cake-making neighbour.

It’s a tin of celery hearts, a tin of cannellini beans, half a tin of chopped tomatoes, a large chopped onion and a teaspoon of Chinese five-spice. Add stock. Cook until the onion has softened. Serve with parsley or coriander.

I was surprised how low in calories it was and might add more pulses to soups in future.

Wednesday + Walking

5 June 2008 at 12:03 pm (food diary)

I got my pedometer finally! It’s been sitting on my desk but yesterday I finally had some energy back and decided to take a walk down to the beach and then to the village to pick up some shopping. I walked 3km / 5000 steps, where the last bit is straight uphill and I had four bags of groceries (really shouldn’t go shopping when hungry!). I now have snack stuff in – two different low cal yogurts and light salad dressing and pumpernickel bread and light Laughing Cow cheese.

I had small meals all day but it was a bit of a pain – I kept having to total everything up to see if I was allowed more and I spent an inordinate time in the kitchen. Also it seems a bit mean on my boyfriend who is not eating normal meals at all. He’s not complained but yesterday he did make the comment that it seemed like I was eating all day long. I don’t think I’d want to watch someone else constantly snacking if I couldn’t! So I think I’ll stick to larger meals. Still – the day didn’t go badly and the fact that I knew he was watching meant I was careful not to go over!
