Feeling good!

I went to see my chiropodist on Thursday, who’s also a qualified podiatrist, to ask her if she had any idea what was wrong with my right (until now good) foot. She said that the problems with my other foot had caused me to put extra pressure on the good one, and she felt the pain and swelling was to do with a tendon not being correctly aligned. She said if it was still painful after the weekend, I was to consult my GP. It was, so I’ve made an appointment for Thursday. I feel like I’m falling apart!

After a one-day break from the low-carb thing, I went back on it at work today. I was going to have a piece of cold chicken breast from the salad bar at work, but then was persuaded by the chef to try the sweet and sour chicken which she’d made “from scratch” herself… it was rather tasty! She estimated the portion was 150-170g of chicken. Instead of rice, I had a small side salad. This evening I bought a piece of hot chicken from the Waitrose rotisserie, cooked a bit of veg and made some gravy from Bisto granules for a rather quick, but tasty meal.

One thing I noticed is that a pair of trousers I wear a lot to work was much looser on me this morning. I checked my hip measurements and have lost 2½” since the start of the diet, which is great!

Dinner Skinless chicken breast with gravy 360
Mixed veg 80
Snack 120g cherries 76
10g peanuts 60

Slippery Sunday

I had some leftover pork loin from Friday’s dinner which I chopped up to turn into a sort of stir-fry dish with red pepper and courge and egg and potato. I was feeling a bit guilty as I could tell it was going to end up rather heavier in calories than was sensible. There was the rest of the wine from Friday night that I’d planned to have tonight so I was trying to keep my overall count low. I increased the amounts of veg and egg so that it made for a large batch to try to cut down the high-cal percentage of the high-calorie ingredients. Then I weighed it out and took one third for my lunch.

It was awful. I tried a few more bites. No, genuinely awful. Not a single saving grace in the world. I refuse to waste calories on this, I thought as I got up. My boyfriend watched me – he’s become very aware of food around him in the third week of his diet.

“You aren’t throwing that away, are you?”
“I am. It’s awful!”
“But that’s a waste.”
I paused. “I refuse to spend calories on something that tastes this bad.”
“You have to count the calories anyway though! Even if you throw it out!”

He was kidding, of course. But that’s what we were taught, wasn’t it? It’s a “waste” to throw food away, someone should eat it. Force it down rather than throw it away, there’s starving children in Africa that would be pleased with such a meal!

I threw it away anyway, along with the additional food in the kitchen (quietly, out of sight, that probably would have killed him) and thought about what to have instead. I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t that hungry actually, especially with that horrible flavour still in my mouth, and so I left it with a plan to have a snack in the afternoon. I have no idea how many calories I had in the three bites that I tried so I put down 200 as definitely above what I might have consumed. As it happens, skipping the meal wasn’t a big deal – a few hours later I still wasn’t very hungry and just had a yogurt for my snack like I normally would.

I’m thinking the high-protein breakfast might have made the difference so I’m trying that again today. And in the end I had my wine anyway.
