Day 243: Irritable. Grr.

By the way, I switched to my size 14 jeans earlier this week. My four pairs at size 16 – bought only a couple of months ago – are now much too big around the waist. I’m more annoyed at wasting money by buying so many than pleased with the smaller size, since I bought three pairs at size 14. And my wedding ring is too loose and moves around and it’s annoying me. When I got married in 2002, I had trouble getting it on.

2:40pm  Cheese salad sandwich + tea

I left it too long to eat and was ravenous. I resisted getting a piece of fruit at the start.

A new batch! I was disappointed that I didn’t have more of the beef-style pieces. So, besides the tinned tomatoes, garlic and aduki beans, I added sweetcorn, courgette, red pepper, apple and a chopped up vegetarian frankfurter.

Day 242: Beadback live

A bag of chocolate mini-bars arrived in my Viking Direct order. I was buying padded enveloped and needed to add a couple of quid more of stuff to get free delivery. Ahem. I bought them for Frank.

I thought that the stated calories per serving was implausible but, according to calorie-count for Dairy Milk, they might be right. I’m surprised that Cadbury’s haven’t slapped Diet on the packaging, since these bars have fewer calories than the Slim-Fast chocolate peanut snack bar at 99 calories.

12:50pm  Cheese and onion toasted sandwich + tea

Lots of iceberg (yuck) lettuce liberated from last weekend’s BBQ.

Surprisingly, with this much lettuce, I could still taste – and enjoy – both the cheese and the onion.

Day 11 – Portion Control

5 September 2008 at 9:11 pm (shopping)

Posted by Georgina

It’s been an accidental high calorie day, although snack wise I was very good, I’ve had a few shocks in terms of calorie content of some of my usual foods. So the surprises have pushed me somewhat higher than I was hoping to be given that I’m having an evening off dieting tomorrow night. Still, it’s been an important lesson in portion control.

On to the all important tables…

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Breakfast Tesco BREAKFAST CEREAL Rice Snaps 95
Milk 3.7% fat 83
Cup of Tea 49
Total 227

At least the first surprise of the day was a nice surprise – I decided to measure out the cereal and milk portion I have rather than assuming standard serving and found my serving was much smaller. The downside was it probably wasn’t enough to keep me going until lunchtime and I was REALLY hungry by then.

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Lunch BREAD White, Medium Sliced 262
Butter salted 36
Marmite MARMITE Yeast Extract 20
EGGS Medium, Boiled, Average 171
Tropicana SMOOTHIE – Strawberry & Banana 135
Total 624

A fairly large lunch – in retrospect I would have been quite happy stopping at one slice of toast/marmite rather than having the second. I also discovered that my portion size for a smoothie was about 20% larger than the “serving size” on the carton. Now using a smaller glass.

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Afternoon Tea Cup of Tea 49
Total 49

Not only did I manage to avoid the biscuits, but the kids brought home chocolate from school (was a classmate’s birthday) and I didn’t succumb (although probably due less to willpower and more down to still being full from lunch!)

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Dinner Homemade Coleslaw 73
Homemade Red Onion & Cheddar Quiche 321
POTATOES New, Baby, Average 113
Butter salted 36
CHICKEN Wafer Thin, Average 12
Hellmann’s MAYONNAISE 108
Total 663

The quiche left me in shock. I had NO IDEA that it would be that high calorie (and that was HALF the portion size that I’d normally have). In retrospect, it probably shouldn’t have been a shock – eggs, cheese, pastry and milk aren’t exactly low calorie items, but still.

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Late GIN 37.5% Volume 52
Schweppes TONIC WATER Indian 66
Cadbury HOT CHOCOLATE Instant Break 119
Total 237

Not much to say, other than it was a gin night!

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Exercise Exercise Bike (30 mins) -320
Total -320

I really struggled on the bike tonight. I’m definitely coming down with a nasty cold that the kids have brought home with them from school (they’ve only been THERE 3 days, how unfair is that?!) – I really wanted to earn that G&T! However, I can’t have done that badly and must have gone a bit faster than normal as I burnt a few extra cals off, which made it all worth while.

Cheers.

Oh, the final tally:

Meal Food | Drink Calories
Breakfast Cereal and a cup of tea 227
Lunch Soft boiled eggs and marmitey soldiers with a glass of smoothie 624
Afternoon Tea Cup of Tea 49
Dinner Quiche, coleslaw, new potatoes and chicken slices 663
Late G&T and hot choc 237
Exercise Exercise Bike -320
Total 1,480

Wow. That can’t be right… I thought I’d be really close to 1600 with that. *Does sums*. Oh.

Can I have a piece of chocolate then?

Oh, alright… I’ll be good…

The Evil Crumble

I just thought I’d share with you my temptation.

Also, partially in revenge for all the mouthwatering photographs Paola keeps sharing!!

I used this Ocado recipe but didn’t have any oats in the cupboard so missed that part out. The crumble sort of didn’t and clumped together though, so next time I think I’d use my normal crumble recipe.

Day 23: Bad Day – Weighing in

5 September 2008 at 3:20 am (food diary, weigh-in)

Posted by Ginni

I had my weighing in today, and I put on 2lbs. I am feeling terribly bloated and it seems my period is a week late.

My husband is trying to make me feel better by saying that to me, but I was happy this morning, until I weighed myself, as I had gotten into a Size 16 pair of trousers that I had bought last weekend. So, I am losing inches but not weight? Doesn’t make sense to me!!

I could not go into work today due to my painful, sore and swollen nose!! I went to the Doctors, who sent me to the Xray clinic to check how bad the fracture was, and yes, it is a fracture indeed. To top it, I have a bad cold that has started too, with a blocked sinus….. My diet was not good today. I comfort ate, and I had no resistance to it, albeit I was good by dinner time.

Breakfast:

A cinnamon & raisin bagel, toasted with low fat cream cheese

A cup of coffee (medium) with sweetner

Lunch:

A whopper at Burger King with no bread, just salad, and no mayonnaise with a Diet Coke

Dinner:

Steamed Broccoli, with grilled Fish and Balsamic Vinegar dressing.

I might have a cup of tea or a low fat hot choc before I go to bed, as my head is spinning even as I write. I am irritated as hell, and I really hope tomorrow is better.

Its my son’s first day at Kindergarten tomorrow and I really want it to be a good day for him. We have spent most of this week preparing things for his school, and buying the long list of School supplies.

I was asked at the xray clinic whether I could be pregnant, and I said No. Then she asked me when my last period was, and I was a bit surprised myself when I said it was about 6 weeks ago. I did a pregnancy test, and it was negative. But, I haven’t had a period yet. Perhaps I have been stressed, that’s why its late? But, I am in such a snappy, horrible, irritated mood, …… hormones? or hunger? or a bad day?

Day 22: Good until the evening

5 September 2008 at 1:31 am (food diary)

Posted by Ginni

What started off as a normal day, changed within seconds in the evening.

Breakfast: 7am

Usual yoghurt with mixed berries and museli

Lunch: 12 noon

Usual Spinach Salad, peppers, feta cheese and tomatoes with Italian dressing

Baby Carrots for a snack

Evening: 7pm

Soup – Carrots, Cauliflower, Red Lentils, Onion and Spinach

Dessert – a pot of Oreo low sugar pudding

My evening nightmare:

I wanted to liquidise the Soup and my dearest ‘tall’ husband, as usual put all heavy things on the top shelf of the pantry, but I am a mere 5ft 4ins tall woman! So, when I reached out to get my food blender, it fell on my face and the heavy (bottom) part of the blender smashed the top of my nose. Oh, the agony!!

I actually understand what it means when they show stars revolving around a person’s head in the cartoons. It wasn’t so bad this evening, until this morning of course!!
