Day 24: I need to slow down

Today was as chaotic as a day could have been. I thought, I have my day off and I will have a relaxing day today. Well, that was wishful thinking. Everything unexpected and unplanned that could turn up, did. It was Jakey’s first day at Kindergarten, which is a bit of a farce for 2 hours only, but he had a fab time.

I asked Jakey’s day care teacher, what I should pack for his snack lunch at school, since he was going mid-day but for 2 hours only. She said, ‘Jakey loves Fruit to go’. I had no idea what that was. She took me to her pantry and showed me what it looked like. It was a high sugar snack bar!

I didn’t say anything, and she continued showing me the snack bars and things that all the kids eat from there all day long, and she also pointed out Jakey’s favourites. I was absolutely gobsmacked!! It was like a snack aisle from Walmart!!

I said to her, that I have been struggling to give Jakey healthy foods and make sure he does not have any sugary things, as I wanted him to lose weight before he starts Kindergarten. I could not understand why he was not losing weight. Now I knew!!

It is no wonder Jakey loves her to bits, but this was not what I wanted for him. I know she means well and she has a heart of gold, and a terrible sweet tooth of her own. It made me feel defeated as I have been kicking myself and blaming myself for Jakey for so long. I am so conscious of what I feed him and to see this 8 months later, was a bit of a shock.

Anyways, I resolved things with her with the excuse that Jakey is on the Dash diet with us and he must not touch anything sweet. I will now be packing his food for the day care and his school. It means harder work for me, but at least I will know he is not eating all that rubbish.

He has been coming home irritable, hyper and tired – its no wonder with the sugary foods he had been having.

My food diary: (Not very healthy – been in the car running around all day, like a headless chicken!)

Breakfast: 10am

Coffee and a toasted low carb Bagel ‘drivethru- on the go’

Lunch: 3pm

On the go again

Chicken Sandwich with lettuce and a Diet Coke

Dinner: 10pm

2 low carb toasts with cucumber slices and 3 tbsp of cottage cheese.

Half a cup of milk

I was conscious of what I ate, and it was not strictly a Dash day, but I had low carb alternatives. I need my regular routine in order to function properly and today was not the day.
